Cherry Jam by Opal (1984)

Before forming Mazzy Star with Hope Sandoval, David Roback was in a neo-psych band in the mid 80's called Opal. Here is a lost(and found) instrumental track from the band's early days.

Locked in Cage by Bullet (1981)

Not too much to think about here. Just some plain old metal/hard rock from Germany that gets the juices flowing. The band released a couple of albums in the early 80's before calling it quits. Here is a track off of their debut, Execution.

Bird Dog by the Del Counts (1965)

And now for some 60's garage rock from the Twin Cities. The band took some lyrical liberties from some of their favorite tunes, but it sure sounds good.

Kjøle Høle by Scorch Trio (2004)

I was reading up on this Finnish fusion band that I just discovered and came across this article that aptly describes their second album of "incendiary fusion" as sounding like "Cream or Band of Gypsies". High praise indeed. Check out that article here.

Feed Me With Your Kiss by My Bloody Valentine (1988)

I certainly don't gravitate towards noise and/or shoegaze. However, it occasionally meets my mood. Dublin's My Bloody Valentine performed this music with the best of them. Here they are off of their fourth LP, Isn't Anything.

Lover & A Friend by Eddie Bo & Inez Cheatham (1968)

About a year and a half ago, I featured the musical stylings of one Eddie Bo with his 1961 hit, Check Mr. Popeye. A few years later, he caught fire in a bottle in this soulful duet with Inez Cheatham.

Do Your Feeling by King Floyd (1973)

New Orleans' born and bred, King Floyd was mostly known as a "one-hit" wonder for his excellent "Groove Me" single released in 1971. However, as there usually is, there was more to his career. Here he is off of his second LP, Think About It.

Pantherman by Pantherman (1974)

Is there such a thing as dark glam? I'm not sure, but for me that is how I can most accurately describe the musical stylings of Pantherman. Pantherman, the stage name of 70's Dutch recording artist Frank Klunhaar, was responsible for three singles that are definitely worth finding. Here is the A side of the first single.

Bogged Down by White Lightning (1969)

And now for some recently uncovered Cream-inspired hard/blues rock from Minneapolis. The band only released a couple of singles during their three year incarnation. Fortunately, more music from this period was recently released. Check out this little scorcher.

Sacrifice by Ebenezer (1974)

In this blog space, I've featured the satanic rock stylings of Coven and Black Widow. So, in the interest of equal time, today's song of the day is from 1970's Australian Christian rockers, Ebenezer. While the lyrics hold about as much weight with me as that of Coven, the music is heavy and plodding, just the way I like it.

The Flag by Royal Trux (1993)

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion wasn't the only great group to be created out of the ashes of 80's punk/garage band Pussy Galore. The band's guitarist, Neil Hagerty, formed Royal Trux with his girlfriend Jennifer Herrema. The band would go on to release 10 albums between 1988 and 2000 before breaking up. They have recently re-united and are soon to release a new album. Here's a track from their 1993 classic, Cats and Dogs.

Det är där jag vill vara by Siv Pettersson (1972)

Siv Pettersson was a young Swedish singer/songwriter who released a couple of albums in her short life. (She was killed in a car accident at the age of 19). It's hard to believe that she was only sixteen when she is singing so strongly here on her self-titled debut LP.

Tartan Pants by Giuda (2010)

Most modern day bands that try to sound garage or glam come across as phony. It's not the date of release that makes me feel this, it is something in the actual music. Not being a musician myself, I can't really identify it, but I know it when I hear it. The Roman band, Giuda, does not suffer this fate. They sound like they legitimitely could have recorded their music in 1975. Here they are off of their 2010 debut album, Racey Roller.

Never Too Late by The Apostles (1976)

After the Nigerian Civil War ended in the early 1970's, a vibrant Afro-Funk/psych music scene started to develop in the eastern portion of the country. One of the unofficial leaders of this scene were the Apostles. The band would release 8 albums over seven years. Here they are with the first track off of their self-titled, debut 1976 release.

Come On Up by Art (1967)

Before meeting up with Gary Wright, the future members of Spooky Tooth recorded an ahead-of-its-time hard psych album under the name, Art. This album, Supernatural Fairy Tales, is a bit better than most of Spooky Tooth's subsequent output IMHO.  See if you agree.

Open Up Your Mind by The Nuchez's (1966)

It definitely seemed that this short-lived Chicago area 60's garage band was torn between making a nice pop song and working out a new fuzz pedal. In any case, while dated, it is enjoyable to me.

Buddha's Blues by Don Cherry (1977)

Remember Neneh Cherry of Buffalo Stance fame in the late 80s? Or her younger half brother Eagle Eye Cherry, who saw some success in the 90's? Well, I prefer the music of their father, masterful avant-garde/fusion jazz trumpeter, Don Cherry. Here he is with a shorter track off of his 1977 release, Here and Now.

Is There No Peace by Zendik (1970)

Zendik was another one of those bands that existed at the height of rock n roll's output, 1970. As a result, the Chicago area band's one single of two beautifully crafted songs went largely unnoticed and nothing more was heard from the group. I'm glad that it's been restored to the world via the Internet.

FFF by Public Image Limited (1986)

Recently, many of my Facebook friends started posting their favorite albums. One selection(Thank you Seb!) reminded me of an album that I had largely forgotten about, PIL's Album. And what an album it was. The backing musicians are a who's who of rock and jazz. The track was written by Lydon and legendary jazz bassist, Bill Laswell. Tony Williams is playing drums, and Parliament Funkadelic's Bernie Worrell is on the organ. Even Steve Vai is on guitar! Most importantly, they don't try to overplay the music despite their respective instrumental firepower. Here is the opening track!

Mamie is Blue by Faust (1972)

Faust were one of the great Krautrock bands of the early 70's. They released four albums and called it quits by 1975. They would go on to reunite in the 90's with the help of Sonic Youth, but the core of their contribution to music was in those first four albums. Here they are off of their second album, Faust So Far, which is not the greatest hits compilation that the title suggests.

Shotgun by Vanilla Fudge (1969)

Vanilla Fudge made a career of covering Motown and other 60's pop hits in a way that would stretch them out, adding psychedelic tones and long jam sequences. Here they are with one of my favorite examples of this, their cover of Junior Walker's "Shotgun".

Business Partners by Chairman Youth (1980)

Today, Deep Rock Mining is featuring a London post punk band that were only together for a few months and released one single. The opening riff of Business Partners sounds a bit like an infamous King Missile song released a dozen years later, no?

Uncontrollable Urge by SIN 34 (1983)

SIN 34 was one of the first female-fronted hardcore punk bands and recently departed lead singer Janet Lanfeld-Keskin was a tour de force. Check out any of the grainy videos on Youtube to get an idea of what one of the band's live shows felt like. Here is the band with a very respectable cover of a Devo classic off of their first and only LP, Do You Feel Safe?

Clear Windowpane by Saint Vitus (1986)

The musical archivist in me is super encouraged that I found today's featured song in the otherwise desolate musical landscape of 1986. This L.A. proto-doom metal band was making great music in the mid-80's that thankfully seems out of time with the era. Here they are with a track off of their third LP, the aptly titled Born Too Late.

Black Lightning Light by The Shy Guys (1968)

There were actually two garage rock/psych bands in the 60's named the Shy Guys. I guess they didn't have the internet then. In any case, today's band is the one from Florida that released only one single. This is the b-side of Goodbye To You.

Stop It by Pylon (1980)

In 1987, when Rolling Stone named R.E.M. the best band in America, drummer Bill Berry said that that title belonged to Pylon, one of the other bands in the highly influential Athens, Georgia music scene. That may have been an overstatement, but it was 1987... Regardless of "best of" lists, Pylon was just a very good band with a distinct sound. Here they are off of their debut 1980 album, Gyrate.

Black Hole, Weirdo Shrine by La Luz (2015)

Not sure it gets much cooler these days than going to see a La Luz show. Shana Cleveland and the gang are producing some great melodic neo-surf music that needs to be heard. Check them out here off of their 2015 release, Weirdo Shrine. The link below is for there official video.

Little Green Man by Rotomagus (1971)

Now here is some recently uncovered French proto-punk/hard rock from a band's recordings in 1971. Rotomagus released only one single with their label before being dropped. That's too bad. It would have been interesting to hear more from this band.

Triple Trebles by Jimmy Dawkins (1969)

I've said before that a good recipe for being a great bluesman involves being born in the South and migrating to Chicago. It worked for Tampa Red, Smokey Smothers, Otis Rush, and Luther Allison. It also worked for Jimmy Dawkins, who was a guitar picker of the highest caliber. Check him out here with an instrumental number off of his debut album, Fast Fingers.
