Afro-Strut by The Nite-Liters (1972)

Louisville, Kentucky's The Nite-Liters had been around since 1963, with many line-up changes and additions over the years. It wouldn't be until the early 1970's, when soul was still popular and funk was on the rise, that this band would finally start to get some recognition. Here they are with an instrumental track off of their 1972 release, Instrumental Directions.

Your Song by Product of Reason (1980)

Product of Reason was a post-punk band that were first noticed in England in 1980 and wound up on the excellent compilation LP, Household Shocks. The band would only go on to record one EP in their day before calling it quits. More of their recorded works finally got released in 2002 in the A Cure for Insomniacs CD. Here they are from their early days.

My Sister by The Julianna Hatfield Three (1993)

Before going completely solo, Boston's Julianna Hatfield released a couple of albums with group, The Julianna Hatfield Three. I remember hearing today's featured song a lot back in 1993/94 on WFNX in Boston and never tuning away. There's something to be said for a smartly written, well-performed pop rock tune.

Spoiler by Haystacks Balboa (1970)

Now here is a track that sounds to me more like 1974 that 1970, but I'm always getting surprised when researching songs for this blog. This band included Leslie West's brother Larry, who co-wrote a couple of the heavier tunes from this album including the track featured today.

Black Star Risin' by Bodine (1983)

Now here is a Dutch band that seems to bridge the gap between NWOBHM and the hair bands of the later 80's. This is a track off of their third and final album, Three Times Running.

Dağlar Dağladı Beni by Edip Akbayram (1974)

Turkey had a rich folk/garage/psych scene that started in the late 60's, but really blossomed in the early 70's. Some of the acts that made up this scene have been featured on Deep Rock Mining before such as Barış Manço and Selda Bağcan. Here is another from Edip Akbayram.

It's a Good Thing by That Petrol Emotion (1986)

That Petrol Emotion was a (mostly) Northern Irish band that played some intriguing post punk that had a big sound. Of course, that's my non-musician way of describing it. Check it out for yourself!

I Didn't Take Your Man by Ann Peebles (1978)

Haven't featured a straight up soul tune in a long while, so I'm going to correct that with this unapologetic song from Ann Peebles.

Devil Don't Get Me by Doldinger's Motherhood (1970)

Doldinger's Motherhood is a German jazz fusion that put out a great underknown couple of albums between 1969 and 1970. Here is a real scorcher from their second release, Motherhood, that sounds inspired by Frank Zappa's Hot Rats album of the prior year. If you know me, that is high praise!

Speak by Swans (1982)

No wave, post-punk, avant-garde, noise, post-rock, Swans have done it all in their storied career. I prefer their earlier stuff, but can get into their later work if in the right mood. Here they are from the beginning in 1982.

Dream On My Mind by Rupert's People (1967)

Last summer, I featured a song of the day from John Bromley who was backed up by British freakbeaters the Fleur De Lys on a track from 1969. Today, I'm backing up a couple of years to when an all studio band known as Rupert's People were pulled together to record some songs written by Rod Lynton. Many members of this band were from, you guessed it, the Fleur De Lys. One of these days, I'll get around to featuring a song purely by the Fleur De Lys, but until then enjoy this psych-tinged track.

Set Phazer to Stun by The Time and Space Machine (2010)

The process of writing this daily song of the day blog over the last few years has really opened my eyes to the fact that the neo-psych music scene is rich and robust. While I've featured tracks by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound, and Tame Impala, I feel that I'm still only scratching the surface. Here is a side project of British musician/engineer Richard Norris with the title track off of his 2010 release.

Sexopolis by Jean Pierre Mirouze (1971)

And now for something completely different...Here is a track of interesting soundtrack music from a "scandalous(at the time)" Danish/French movie, "Le Mariage Collectif"

Eve by Hashish (1970)

Today's proto-stoner hard rock track came from a recent limited release, 2012's Casting the Runes (The Recorded British Abyss 1969-1976). This compilation pulled some recorded tracks that never got released in their day. I don't know exactly which year this Hashish track was recorded, so I'm going with my gut of about 1970. Regardless of when it was released, this music is intense!

Rest Comfortably by Quiet World (1970)

Right before guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1970, he was part of another band lead by the Heather Brothers(John, Lea, and Neil). This group was a little more vocally focused than Hackett's next band, but has an interesting sound.

Helpless by Diamond Head (1980)

And now for some NWOBHM that had a profound influence on Metallica. They even first recorded Am I Evil? around the same time that today's featured song was recorded.

Runaway Train by Lightning Bolt (2015)

Lightning Bolt is a very underrated noise rock duo that formed in the mid nineties at the Rhode Island School of Design. It's embarrassing that I hadn't heard of them until their most recent album came out in 2015. Here is some noisy bliss off of that LP, Fantasy Empire.

Saturday's Son by The Sons of Adam (1966)

The Sons of Adam were an L.A. garage band, by way of Baltimore, that managed to put out a few singles in the three plus years that they existed. A couple of the band members went on to have notable music careers after The Sons of Adam disbanded. Randy Holden would go on to form Blue Cheer and the drummer, Michael Stuart would go on to play with Love. Here they are from a 1966 B side.

The Pusher by Young Flowers (1969)

Young Flowers were quite the power trio in Denmark back in the late sixties. They managed to release a couple of albums before calling it quits. It wouldn't be until decades later that some of their live tracks were released on CD. Here they are with a version of a song written by Hoyt Axton and popularized by Steppenwolf thats got a bit of a "Louie Louie" feel to it...

Il Giorno Buono by Moby Dick (1970)

Moby Dick was an Italian prog/hard rock band that tried to sing most of their tunes in English to gain a larger following. Unfortunately, it didn't work and their initial recordings were never released until the early 2000's. And, actually, I think the few songs that had Italian lyrics were better anyway. Here is one of them.

Buena by Morphine (1993)

If you haven't spent a month sometime in your late 20's listening to almost nothing but Morphine, then you haven't lived. Well, you haven't lived my life anyway! The title song of their second LP, Cure for Pain, gets all the limelight, but just about anything off of their first three albums is great. Here is another track off of the 1993 moody masterpiece.

I'm a Loner by Roy Young (1973)

Known in England as the British Little Richard, Roy Young had quite a storied career having shared a stage with the Beatles back in the Hamburg days. He would then join a group called Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers and open for the Beatles on their 1966 tour. Later, in the 70's, he formed his own band and would continue to perform through 2014. Sadly, he died just a couple of months ago at the age of 83. Here he his with a decidedly harder rocking track than usual with a B side from 1973.

We Are Enough by Melt Yourself Down (2012)

Melt Yourself Down is a British band that combines jazz, punk, funk, and North African music into an interesting and unique blend. Bandleader, saxophonist Pete Wareham, describes the music as "Nubian inspired party punk music". However you describe it, you want to spin this disc over and over.

Bad Shit by Porno for Pyros (1993)

While I, like many, were disappointed that Jane's Addiction broke up, I couldn't have been happier with what Perry Farrell built out of the ashes of his former band. Of course, that's probably because it sounds very similar! Here is the first track on side 2 of the eponymous debut album.
