Solar Level by The Johnny Almond Music Machine (1969)

Johnny Almond was a saxophonist who spent much of his time as a session musician in the 60's. He recorded with John Mayall, Chicken Shack, Fleetwood Mac, and many others. In the early 70's, Johnny went on to form Mark-Almond with guitarist Jon Mark. Inbetween those two parts of his career, Johnny Almond went on to record a couple of albums under his own direction. Here he is off of 1969's Patent Pending.

Ticket to Pick It by the Les Dudek Band (1974)

In addition to supporting the Steve Miller Band and Boz Scaggs in the 70's, guitarist Les Dudek was quite a musician in his own right. Here he is with his own band in 1974.

Tarkio Road by Brewer & Shipley (1970)

Brewer & Shipley were/are a folk rock duo who had one of the iconic hits of the hippie generation, One Toke Over The Line. As cliched as that song may be, I've still myself singing along if I hear it on the oldies station. Still, there was more to the band than just that one song. Check out the second biggest hit from their third album.

Crazy Man by Josefus (1970)

Today, let's dig back to some early Texas hard rock with a tinge of Southern Rock. Josefus cranked out three albums over a two-year period and would be done by 1971. Here they are from their sophomore effort, Dead Man.

Stokely Up Now by Brant Bjork and the Low Desert Punk Band (2014)

I've been featuring more modern music(since 2000) over the last few weeks. Is the music getting better? No. Just my discovery of good rock music has improved. Unlike when I was growing up, rock music is not right on the surface to be discovered. You have to go looking for it. In any case, former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork has made about ten albums in various incarnations since his first solo release in 1999. 2014 marked the first LP from Brant and the Low Desert Punk Band. Check out Stokely Up Now from their album, Black Flower Power.

Dogwood Rust by Comets on Fire (2006)

In the mood for some relatively modern day psychedelic rock? I hope so. If that's the case, then you may enjoy this California band's work. Here they are from their fourth and final(so far) album, 2006's Avatar.

Take a Little Word by Hudson-Ford (1974)

Hudson-Ford was started in 1973 when John Ford and Richard Hudson left Strawbs to do their own thing. To my ears, this band is very "hit or miss". That said, I really enjoy this tune from their second full length release, Free Spirit.

Liquor Queen by The Atomic Bitchwax (2002)

If you like rock music, specifically hard rock or blues rock on amphetamines, then you should like the Atomic Bitchwax. This New Jersey band has actually been cranking out good music since 1993 and is still doing so today. Here is an instrumental track off of their 2002 EP, Spit Blood.

Little Brown Hen by Aum (1969)

Today on Deep Rock Mining, I'm digging deep into the late 60's San Franscisco rock scene. Here is a short-lived blues rock band that delivered a powerful punch with their two 1969 albums. Here is a short scorcher off of their second album, Resurrection.

Do You Remember? by Hüsker Dü (1983)

The pride of St. Paul, Minnesota, Hüsker Dü, were very influential in the Upper Midwest in the post punk era. They were punk, but introduced melody a bit later in their career. I prefer the earlier days, so here is a track off of their first full length release.

Clearlight by Nebula (1999)

When Fu Manchu members' Eddie Glass and Ruben Romano left the band in 1997, they quickly reformed a new band, Nebula. Here they are off of their first release in 1999 with this scorcher.

Crosstown Girl by Bux (1973)

Bux was a short-lived pseudo-hard rock band that existed and toured for about two years(1972-74). They managed to record an album in 1973, but it would not get released by the record company until two years after the band split. This album is a nice time capsule for what was happening in the rock world in 1973, though. Definitely worth a listen.

All Must Die by The Oath (2014)

This German/Swedish/British heavy metal band was only together for about two years. They got their self-titled debut album recorded and then called it quits. Which, is too bad, because this band really pulled off a late 70's/early 80's metal style. See if you agree.

Restless Youth by Ian Hunter (1976)

After the dissolution of Mott the Hoople, Ian Hunter went straight into a rockin' solo career. Now, he didn't exceed the success of Mott the Hoople, he didn't exactly fade away. He made a lot of good music with Mick Ronson. However, here off of Ian's second solo album, Ronson did not appear. Instead, Hunter put together a studio band that included Aynsley Dunbar, Jaco Pastorius, Chris Stainton, and many others. Check out Restless Youth.

Featherbedding Lover by The Nazz (1969)

Today's song of the day harkens back to when Todd Rundgren was still playing rock n' roll. After the Nazz, Todd began the slow journey to his soft rock solo work of the 70's. Here is a bit of a scorcher from the Nazz' second album, Nazz Nazz, the last to feature Mr. Rundgren.

Hold On by The Rascals (1969)

The Rascals were one of those second tier rock bands of the 60's that had some success, but didn't really get much critical acclaim. The fact of the matter was that these guys had talent, especially band leader, vocalist, keyboardist Felix Cavaliere. Check out this track from 1969.

Sleeping in Blood City by The Gun Club (1982)

I love me some some classic psychobilly. Here were one of the first bands to develop that sub-genre, The Gun Club. Today's song is off of their second LP, Miami, a masterpiece. Check the whole album if you ever get the chance.

Tarova by Snarky Puppy (2016)

Snarky Puppy is a modern day jazz fusion band with a constantly evolving lineup of multi-instrumentalists. With thirteen or so current members of the band, Snarky Puppy has surpassed Funkadelic as the band featured in this space with the most members. Snarky Puppy's music is smooth, but funky. Here is a track off of their latest release, Culcha Vulcha.

Hard Rain Fallin' by Sir Lord Baltimore (1970)

Today on Deep Rock Mining, some of Brooklyn's hardest rockers are being featured(No, they were not from Baltimore). Sir Lord Baltimore formed in 1968 and put out two full length albums before they dissolved in the early 70's. There have been some sporadic reunions and studio work recorded over the next several decades, but ended when founder/lead singer/drummer John Garner died last year. Today's song was their first single.

Echoes by The Rapture (2003)

Now here's some post-punk that you can dance to. This New York City band had a bit of that Gang of Four sound twenty years after the fact, mixed with some noise. In any case, enough of me trying to explain it. Just listen!

Sunday by Andwella's Dream (1969)

Andwella's Dream, later shortened to Andwella, was a Northern Irish psychedelic band. They managed to release three albums and a bunch of singles over the course of about 3 years. Here they are from their first album, Love and Poetry, with a perfect song for Sundays.

Lightning by Iron Claw (1971)

Iron Claw is a perfect band for this blog space. On a plot graph of greatness and anonymity, Iron Claw sits firmly in the upper right quadrant. Wow, that was a seriously geeky way of saying that this Scottish hard rock band did not get their due when they actually existed. They couldn't even get a record deal. They made music between 1969 and 1974, but never saw anything get released until 1996.

You can pick out any tune from that 1996 compilation to show this band's talent. This one's called Lightning.

Hey Gyp by The Orphans (1967)

The Orphans were a mid-Sixties' garage band from Iowa that released one single. The A Side was "Without You" and on the flip side was today's song. It was written by Donovan, but this version doesn't sound very Donovanesque...

Vivisection 2000 by Kaos (2000)

Kaos was a thrash metal band from the Bay Area that stuck around for thirteen years as a band before recording their first full length LP, 2000's Vision Beyond.  After that, they managed to release two more LPs in the next decade before finally calling it quits in 2013. Here they are from their debut album.

Make It Easy by The Flames (1970)

The Flames were a South African band that achieved some level of success in their home country before moving to London in 1968 and then over to California in 1969. It is there where they connected with the Beach Boys' Carl Wilson. He produced their 1970 album, The Flame, on which today's song appeared.

Once or Twice by Chicago (1976)

Chicago could easily go "too soft" in my opinion. This was often the case with Peter Cetera penned tunes. I tend to gravitate to lead guitarist Terry Kath's work. Terry would, unfortunately, die of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1978. After that, Chicago held no interest for me. Here is Terry rocker from two years before his death with Once or Twice off of the Chicago X album.

Long Neck Goose by Detroit (1971)

You've heard of the group, Boston? You've heard of the group, Chicago? But have you heard of the group, Detroit? This group was a spinoff of Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels featuring Mitch and almost none of the Wheels. It's just some straight-ahead rock n' roll.
