Born Slippy by Underworld (1995)

When Trainspotting came out, I was at the perfect age for it's demographic(about 25 years old). And to no surprise, I loved the film. It even made me go buy the soundtrack on CD. While there were a lot of good tunes, I was surprised how much I loved an "electronic" track by Underworld. It quickly became my favorite song on the album, despite previously not having liked the genre. As a result, it opened my eyes to the fact that there was a lot of good music in the electronic realm.

Get Someone To Love Me by Rancid X (1978)

One of my favorite deejays is Sara J on WMBR(college radio station of MIT) in Cambridge, MA. She has a weekly show(Gorilla Got Me-Fridays 4PM to 5:30PM EST + streaming) that returned to the airwaves last Fall after a three year hiatus. Her musical selections of trashy rock, glam, punk, and garage tracks are right up my alley. On more than a few occasions, she has introduced me to music that has wound up in this blog space. Today is another such example. Rancid X was an Italian punk band with a great sound. Check them out!

Nighttime Killers by Bedemon (1979)

Back in the Summer of 2017, Deep Rock Mining featured a post about heavy metal pioneers Pentagram, who never released an album during the initial existence of the band. Come to find out that there was an offshoot of this band called Bedemon that recorded some tracks in 1973/74 and put them on the shelf. The band members would reconvene in 1979 to record some more tracks. This material was also shelved. It wouldn't be until 2005 when this material would see the light of day. In any case, here is a track from those 1979 sessions. This proto-doom music was recorded in a rather lo-fi way, but you can still feel the energy.

Cold Light by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (2003)

The debut album by Yeah Yeah Yeahs was one of those CDs that I immediately liked and I played it nonstop for about a month. There is something about Karen O's vocals that makes any song that much better. Here is one of the more popular tracks off of that debut release, Fever To Tell.

We're The Oppressed by The Oppressed (1983)

The Oppressed were one of the UK skinhead bands that were vocally against racism and fascism. They considered themselves warriors for the working class. Here they are from their first release.

Est-Ce Que Tu Le Sais by Sylvie Vartan (1962)

Sylvie Vartan, the Bulgarian-French chanson singer, was one of the best of the genre. She often included dance routines in her shows. One is featured here in this 60's lip-synched video. This is her take on Ray Charles' What'd I Say.

So Sorry by The Love Affair (1968)

Today here on Deep Rock Mining, I'm featuring a pop psych band, The Love Affair, of which I'd recently become aware. They released a couple of nice sounding, if sometimes too slick LPs during their short existence. Here is my favorite track from their debut LP.

Beastie, Beastie by Hedvig Mollestad Trio (2018)

I was combing through some "best albums of 2018 lists" and finally came to the Rolling Stone list, which I expected to be the most predictable. However, there was an album they were touting called Smells Funny, by this Norwegian jazz rock band. So, I checked it out and the whole album in phenomenal. I still have to dig into their back catalog, but for now here is the opening track off their latest release.

Sister Serena by Dogmatics (1984)

The thing I liked about a lot of 80's garage bands was that they weren't trying to sound like 60's garage bands. Neo garage bands often "try to hard" for that classic sixties sound and usually miss the mark. Not so with Boston's own Dogmatics. This band released a couple of really good albums in the mid 80's. Here they are off of their first, Thayer St.

I Don't Wanna Hear It by Minor Threat (1981)

Right up there with Black Flag's very first records with Johnny Bob Goldstein(aka Keith Morris), Minor Threat's complete discography is perhaps the most powerful music, pound-for-pound, that's ever been released IMHO. When I am randomly listening to records and I put on their LP, it will be the last record I play, because nothing else adequately follows it. So turn it up!

Chango by Flash & The Dynamics (1971)

Staying in 1971, but moving to the east coast and with an Afro-Cuban feel. I've been discovering a lot of Latin rock/jazz these days. Here is but one example. This track really cooks. Apologies for blank video, but the music is good.

Danger Zone by Nash The Slash (1980)

Toronto's own Jeff Plewman, aka Nash the Slash, made a number of electronic and experimental albums over four decade before passing in 2014. Here he is with a spooky electronic number from his third album, Children of the Night.

You're So Sorry by Budget Girls (1997)

UK independent label Damaged Goods has now been around for 30 years! In that time, they have been consistent in producing minimalist rock n roll/garage/punk and have quite often done so with bands that look the part and sing scandalous lyrics. Today's featured band is no exception. Budget Girls were two US women(Teri and Christen) from somewhere in the Midwest that sang often provocative lyrics while a three-piece British garage band pulled together the music. The selected song today has pretty basic lyrics, but you get the idea behind the band.

I'm Earth by Black Dresses (2018)

I recently came across an article on the Dangerous Minds website featuring Graham Duff's top 20 albums of 2018. I decided to check out these albums online to see if anything grabbed my interest. Graham's collection was a mash-up of electronic, pop, and indie rock. These aren't generally the genres that most interest me, but thought I would expand my horizons. In most cases, I couldn't get into the albums that Graham chose, but there were a few exceptions. Here is a quirkly, electronic duo that was at the top of Graham's list with one of the tracks off of their 2018 release, WasteIsolation. The vocals here sound a bit like Ke$ha, no? The link to the video for their song is below:

Rattlesnake by Ohio Players (1975)

As a young child, I remember leafing through some of my father's record collection. In addition to the Theleonius Monk and Nancy Wilson LPs, there was a cope of Ohio Player's Honey LP from 1975 that featured a naked woman in different poses with a whole lot of honey. The tamest photo was the album cover below.

I remember feeling kind of creeped out that my father owned a copy. That was enough to keep me away from listening to their music for thirty years! I finally did explore some of the band's material. Here is a funky single from the same year, but didn't make the album.

Hard To Get Over a Heartbreak by Raspberries (1973)

I'm not usually one for pop rock, but when it's done right, it can be enjoyable. Such is the case with this 1973 track from Cleveland's Raspberries off of their third album, Side 3.

Turned on Boogie by Power (2018)

Often, my true personal test for evaluating newer music is if it tricks me into thinking it was from an earlier era. I heard today's track on college radio and swore it was some unknown band from 1978(or before). Come to find out it is from a modern day band from Melbourne that just released its second album. Check it out.

Dogs by Christian Death (1981)

From Los Angeles, California, goth rockers Christian Death have had quite the productive career, putting out over twenty albums since the early 80's. Here they are from 1981 with a song that originally was released on a compilation called Hell Comes to Your House.

You Turned Your Back and Walked Away by Henry Turtle (1972)

Henry Turtle is a unique British musician whose style has evolved over the years through a series of singles that have haphazardly been released while never releasing a solo album. In any case, here he is with the B side of his first solo single. Don't worry, the warbly prelude only lasts twenty seconds.

Raging Violence by Hirax (1985)

Hirax was a thrash metal band out of the L.A. scene in the mid-80's that produced a couple of high-speed, powerful albums before calling it quits. Here they are with the title track off of their debut, Raging Violence.

Pure, White & Deadly by Baby Grande (1975)

Prior to forming The Church in 1980, lead singer Steve Kilbey and guitarist Peter Koppes were in a glam band in Canberra called Baby Grande. The music was not released at the time and sat on the shelf for over forty years. Thanks to the HoZac label's archival series, these tapes have seen the light of day this year. Check out the glam goodness.

Sweet Revenge by The New Tony Williams Lifetime (1976)

A few years ago, in this blog space, I featured a song from the works of Jack Bruce, John McLaughlin, and Tony Williams as they were known as the Tony Williams Lifetime. A few years later, Tony would form a new band. This quartet didn't have quite the name recognition of the members of the first iteration, but they did have some chops. Here they are off of their second album, Million Dollar Legs.

Green Eyed American Actress by Jimmy Campbell (1970)

It's not often that I play folk or folk rock here on Deep Rock Mining. However, I recently heard this song by a Liverpudlian singer/songwriter I hadn't heard of. He definitely made some interesting music that really has that early 1970's vibe.

Silver Lightning by Bow Wow (1977)

Not to be confused with Bow Wow Wow, the English new wave band who rode to glory on their cover of I Want Candy, Bow Wow was a hard rock outfit out of Japan. They definitely thrived on the arena rock sound. Here they are with a track off of their second album, 1977's Signal Fire.

Nu Spartans by Tripod Jimmie (1982)

When Tom Herman left Pere Ubu after the band's third album, he moved back to Erie, Pennsylvania and formed a new band with some local musicians. They quickly pulled together their post punk debut album, Long Walk Off a Short Pier, in 1982. It would be another four years before they released their second and last LP, A Warning to All Strangers. Here is a track off of their debut.
