Angel Easy by Man (1971)

Last year, one of Deke Leonard's solo songs was featured in this space. Today, we go back a couple of years earlier to when Deke was performing with progressive/blues rockers, Man. Here they are with a Beat Club performance with all of the requisite psychedelic "effects".

Apple Tree by Wolfmother (2005)

Wolfmother is an Australian hard rock band whose music can get pretty eclectic at times. Today's song of the day selection is definitely has a punk sound to it. They have since stretched out their music. If you have a chance to see them, do so. Their current tour dates are here.

Red and Orange by John Abercrombie (1975)

[Original video deleted on Youtube-similar version here]Talk about a jazz fusion power trio. Helping out guitarist John Abercrombie were Jan Hammer on organ and synth and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Here is yet another example of a forgotten album by masterful musicians.

Big John Is My Name by Rare Earth (1973)

Rare Earth was mostly known as the biggest (mostly) white band that was signed to Motown Records. Aside from this demographic fact, it should be noted that the band made some great psychedelic soul/funk music. Here is a later example from the band.

On the Beach at Fontana by Fall of Saigon (1981)

The other day I mentioned that I downloaded a ton of songs from a great mix of music from 1981 that was compiled by Ian Manire. Well, today I found another gem to share. Here is a short-lived French trio with a synth-driven track.

She Couldn't Make Gravy by Zebedee (1971)

I found today's song on one of the many helpful compilations of psych rock and/or freakbeat. Today's selection comes from The Electric Asylum Vol. 3(2009). All that I know about today's group Zebedee is that they were from Britain, recorded a cover of Leonard Cohen's So Long Marianne, and that they are not to be confused with the Irish rock band of the same name. Well, here is the B-side to So Long Marianne.

Turn It Out by Death From Above 1979 (2004)

Death From Above 1979 is a Toronto-based duo, consisting of drums, bass/keyboards. When they first hit the scene in the early 2000's, their music sounded refreshing, perhaps a signal that rock music was making a somewhat commerical comeback. It wasn't really meant to be, though, and neither was Death From Above 1979. They would break up by 2005. The band would, however, reform almost ten year later for a f/up album. I sort of like it, but I like their first album a lot better. Here they are from that debut release, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine.

Is There an Exit? by Absolute Body Control (1981)

I was recently perusing the Dangerous Minds website and came across an article that linked to a mixed set of music from 1981, compiled by Ian Manire, that was now available for download for the first time. So, 1.65 gigabytes later, I am in the process of discovering a bunch of new music from 1981. Here is one of the first that I've come across listening to this collection.

Absolute Body Control was an electronic/new wave band from Belgium. Here is their first single.

Little Miss Rock n' Roll by Hydra (1975)

Don't be deceived by the fact that Atlanta-based rockers signed with Capricorn Records. They did not really play "Southern Rock". They had much more of an arena rock sound. The band managed to release three albums in the mid-70's before calling it quits. Here they are off of their second album, Land of Money.

Hav Av Hat by Sunday Morning Einsteins (2003)

About eight or nine years ago, I was looking into diving deeper into hardcore punk(beyond Black Flag and Minor Threat). A friend (Thanks, Murray!) recommended a weekly two-hour podcast from DC I believe. I can't remember the name of it, unfortunately. But I did download about five shows and got exposed to a whole other universe of hardcore from the nineties and beyond, as well as music from all over the world. One of the first bands that I dug was Sunday Morning Einsteins. Here is this Swedish band with a track from their second LP, Kangnave.

Water Moccasin by Caustic Resin (1995)

Idaho indie/alt rockers Caustic Resin released six full albums between 1993 and 2003. Here is the band off of their sophomore effort, Fly Me To The Moon, with a tune that sounds influenced by Jane's Addiction to my ears.

My Life by Thor's Hammer (1966)

Thor's Hammer was an Icelandic garage rock band that was a bit ahead of their time. Their 1966 style of garage rock was definitely bordering on psychedelia. Considering that their couldn't have been many psych rock bands in Iceland at that time suggests that they were quite innovative.

St. Cecilia by Stalk-Forrest Group (1970)

The Stalk-Forrest Group recorded a nice little psychedelic album in 1970. However, the band and/or the record company weren't terribly excited about it and shelved the project. A year later, the band switched bass players and changed their name to Blue Öyster Cult. Luckily, this music was released thirty years later. Better late than never.

Berry by Hole (1991)

If you strip away all the baggage associated with Courtney Love's marriage to Kurt Cobain and forget about Courtney's subsequent life of celebrity, she was simply the leader of a very good alt/punk bank that produced a couple of really good albums in the early nineties. Here is the band from their first LP, Pretty on the Inside.

Hoochie Koochie Lady by Elf (1972)

When Ronnie James Dio followed Ozzy Osbourne as the vocalist for Black Sabbath, I made the naive assumption that Dio was younger than Ozzy, having only been with Rainbow for a few years. Actually, though, Dio was six years older than Ozzy. Why is this relevant? It just means that Dio had an opportunity to make some interesting music that I'd yet to discover. Before Rainbow, Dio was in a rock band(not hard rock or metal) called Elf that released three albums in the early 70's. I have two of them on vinyl, but not the debut self-titled effort(poor me). I do have the downloaded music, though. Here is the first song off of that debut.

Happiness is Free by Alamo (1971)

Alamo was a psych rock/blues band from Memphis who managed to release one album in the early 70's. It would have been nice to hear them develop in the over indulgent 70's. In any case, here they are off of that first and only album.

Electric Wizard by Electric Wizard (1994)

If Kyuss and Sleep were the Chuck Berry and Little Richard of stoner metal, then Electric Wizard were the Rolling Stones of the subgenre. They came along a few years later and took the music to another level. Here they are with their self-titled song off of their self-titled debut album.

I'm Not Your Stepping Stone by The Flies (1966)

The Flies were one of those bands that bridged the gap between garage and psych. And what a better year for that then 1966. Here the band takes the Paul Revere and Monkees hit song in a groovier direction.

Blow Your Head by Fred Wesley & the J.B.s (1970)

Trombonist Fred Wesley is mostly known for his work with James Brown and James Brown backing band, The J.B.s. Fred also went on to join Parliament Funkadelic in the late 70's. Here he is performing with the J.B.s on this early 70's funky track that didn't get released properly until 1988.

With the Idiots by Urban Junior (2010)

Urban Junior does not like to split the proceeds. This hot shit from Switzerland multi-instrumentalist is a one-man band playing drums, guitar, synthesizers, and other instruments at the same time while singing through a megaphone. But, strangely, it doesn't sound like a trainwreck. See some pics here.

Here he is off of his 2010 release, Two Headed Demon.

Mescal Dance by Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (1986)

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry was a post-punk/goth band from England that I had not heard of until only recently. As it turns out, they made some interesting music in the mid 80's. The vocals are a bit of an acquired taste that I have yet to acquire, but I do enjoy the music. So, here is an instrumental track off of their second album, Paint Your Wagon.

I Got Up by Linda McCartney (1973)

The other day, I was getting caught up on HBO's Girls' final season. At the end of an excellent episode where the show's protagonist finds herself at a crossroads in life, the screen goes black, the credits roll, and this perfectly placed song starts playing. I had to spend five minutes Googling to find out the name of it. To my surprise, this was an obscure Linda McCartney song. Now, I'm aware that Linda McCartney was not a great(or good) singer, but that's not the point. This is just a nice little three minute song about perseverance.

One Five Eight by Stone the Crows (1971)

Scottish blues rockers Stone the Crow were known, at first, for having a dynamic lead singer in Maggie Bell, who sometimes got compared to Janis Joplin. I don't know about that, but the band made some quality music in the late 60's/early 70's. Here they are from their third album, Teenage Licks.
