Uncontrollable Urge by SIN 34 (1983)

SIN 34 was one of the first female-fronted hardcore punk bands and recently departed lead singer Janet Lanfeld-Keskin was a tour de force. Check out any of the grainy videos on Youtube to get an idea of what one of the band's live shows felt like. Here is the band with a very respectable cover of a Devo classic off of their first and only LP, Do You Feel Safe?

Clear Windowpane by Saint Vitus (1986)

The musical archivist in me is super encouraged that I found today's featured song in the otherwise desolate musical landscape of 1986. This L.A. proto-doom metal band was making great music in the mid-80's that thankfully seems out of time with the era. Here they are with a track off of their third LP, the aptly titled Born Too Late.

Black Lightning Light by The Shy Guys (1968)

There were actually two garage rock/psych bands in the 60's named the Shy Guys. I guess they didn't have the internet then. In any case, today's band is the one from Florida that released only one single. This is the b-side of Goodbye To You.

Stop It by Pylon (1980)

In 1987, when Rolling Stone named R.E.M. the best band in America, drummer Bill Berry said that that title belonged to Pylon, one of the other bands in the highly influential Athens, Georgia music scene. That may have been an overstatement, but it was 1987... Regardless of "best of" lists, Pylon was just a very good band with a distinct sound. Here they are off of their debut 1980 album, Gyrate.

Black Hole, Weirdo Shrine by La Luz (2015)

Not sure it gets much cooler these days than going to see a La Luz show. Shana Cleveland and the gang are producing some great melodic neo-surf music that needs to be heard. Check them out here off of their 2015 release, Weirdo Shrine. The link below is for there official video.

Little Green Man by Rotomagus (1971)

Now here is some recently uncovered French proto-punk/hard rock from a band's recordings in 1971. Rotomagus released only one single with their label before being dropped. That's too bad. It would have been interesting to hear more from this band.

Triple Trebles by Jimmy Dawkins (1969)

I've said before that a good recipe for being a great bluesman involves being born in the South and migrating to Chicago. It worked for Tampa Red, Smokey Smothers, Otis Rush, and Luther Allison. It also worked for Jimmy Dawkins, who was a guitar picker of the highest caliber. Check him out here with an instrumental number off of his debut album, Fast Fingers.
