Chicago could easily go "too soft" in my opinion. This was often the case with Peter Cetera penned tunes. I tend to gravitate to lead guitarist Terry Kath's work. Terry would, unfortunately, die of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1978. After that, Chicago held no interest for me.
